The Things You Kill

Canadas officielle Oscarkandidat er instrueret af en iraner og udspiller sig på den anatolske højslette i Tyrkiet, hvor universitetsprofessoren Ali plages af sin mors mistænkelige død. Ali involverer sin gådefulde gartner i en koldblodig hævnaktion, mens skjulte familiehemmeligheder dukker op til overfladen, det lokale politi strammer grebet og tvivlen nager Alis samvittighed så meget, at han til sidst ikke har andet valg end at kigge ned i sin egen sjæls afgrund. Og mens den psykologiske thriller zoomer ind på de dysfunktionelle familieforhold, udvikler historien sig i stadigt mere ildevarslende retninger (David Lynch er en af instruktørens ikke spor hemmelige inspirationskilder)…

English synopsis:

University professor Ali has suspicions about the death of his mother. Convinced that there was foul play in her death, Ali sets out to avenge her with the help of his mysterious gartner. Hidden family secrets come to light, the local police tighten their grip, and Ali's conscience is challenged until he finally has no choice but to look into the abyss of his own soul. And while the psychological thriller zooms in on dysfunctional family relationships, the story develops in increasingly ominous directions.
